The 4-Hour Body and Slow Carbs

Over the years, my eating habits have been all over the place. I’ve been vegan. I’ve dabbled with Paleo. I’ve been strictly dairy-free. I’ve been wildly unhealthy… and everything in between. For the past few months, Kyle and I have been trying to clean up our diets and to stick to mostly clean, un-processed foods… but, man, it’s tough. We both work. We’ve got two little kids. We’re {t i r e d}.

Right after college, we did a strict 21-day raw food cleanse. We actually didn’t make it the entire 21 days, but we felt SO much different. We were sleeping better. We were less bloated. Our skin looked more vibrant. And we were generally happier (except when we were craving pizza and Chipotle). We’ve been saying we’ll do another cleanse for about a year now, to no avail. SO! Instead of going quite that extreme, we’re going to adopt a new way of eating. I’m not sure how long it will last; there’s no “end” date in mind. We’re just hoping to retrain our bodies and our minds and shift towards a cleaner way of eating.

Tim Ferris, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, basically hacked his body and his metabolism with a very specific eating and supplement regime. Fittingly, he dubbed it The 4-Hour Body.  In his book, he talks about changing all sorts of things in your life, but he talks a lot about “the slow-carb diet”. There is a lot that goes into it, but the premise is pretty basic:

  • Eat: lean meat, veggies, beans, nuts (in moderation)
  • Avoid: dairy (eggs are okay), fruit, all grains, sugar
  • Cheat Day: you get one day a week to go HAM and eat whatever you want. Seriously, anything and everything.
  • Red wine is approved (!!!)

There are a lot of supplements involved in order to promote fat loss, but we’re sticking to the eating portion. It certainly wont be easy to cut grains (RIP bread, pizza, soft pretzels), but any diet that allows me a cheat day AND allows wine is worth a shot in my book!

    1. Right? The wine was kind of a selling point for me! Usually new meal plans require it to be cut out and this mama is not ready to give up a glass of wine before bed! Haha. I can’t wait to hear about your 6 week challenge! Hopefully you will be able to utilize some of the recipes we use!
